This is unicornbar's ( http://unicornbar.deviantart.com/ ) lovely character Vesper, whom she asked me to draw on the seaside with a general yellow and blue color scheme. I understand the character is supposed to be partly (or entirely?) a (literal) dragon -- so she is or can be a dangerous person. Hence the scary eagle in front. I was just gonna put a couple of swans in the foreground, because I'm a boring person, but then the client suggested an eagle instead, that being more suitable to who the character is, and the end result was much more interesting.

The eagle is some sort of sea eagle ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_eagle ) -- probably one of these ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-tailed_eagle ), though it's verging on the size of one of these ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steller%27s_sea_eagle ). My understanding is that fish eagles/sea eagles sometimes eat water birds as well as fish, so... that poor little ibis in the right corner is maybe gonna get eaten.

The beach is based on this one ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/andrepipa/2071286155/ ), and the background and colors owe quite a lot to that specific photograph, as you see.

And I suspect that these scarlet ibis ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarlet_ibis ), and that sea eagle would not really be found in the same place at the same time IRL -- but since this is a fantasy setting, I just chose birds and locations for shape and color; I did not check to see what parts of the world they come from.

(This is a pretty damn large picture -- it started out relatively small, but the background kept expanding.)

These are Crysomandiaz's ( http://crysomandiaz.deviantart.com/ ) characters Evariste, Sylvia, and Maria (in order from left to right). They live in a post apocalyptic world which is similar to the present day Mediterranean, as I understand, so I had a lot of fun looking up appropriate plants and architecture.

The town in the background is pretty much a chunk lifted out of the real life town of Manarola ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manarola ) -- and so I take no credit for the design of the town, though I did construct this perspective myself, using a rough plan of the buildings traced off satellite images of the area from Google Maps, and eyeballed elevations of the individual buildings from photographs.

The clothes are a bit of a hodgepodge of eras and styles; I was going for neo-Medieval (as with Evariste's clothes), but then I really wanted to put Maria in some sort of bolero jacket ( similar to this, in this case: http://www.mccord-museum.qc.ca/en/collection/artifacts/M8371.1?Lang=1&accessnumber=M8371.1 ), so I figured in the end that folks in a post-apocalyptic (or indeed in any) future would have access to designs from any and all eras preceding their own.

The boats in the foreground are a couple of Melonseeds ( http://www.melonseed.com/the-remarkable-melonseed-skiff.html ) (something like these ( http://fineartamerica.com/featured/italian-fishing-boats-fishermens-wharf-san-francisco-circa-1903-california-views-mr-pat-hathaway-archives.html ) might have been nice also, but they were too large for my purposes) which I modeled and projected into the appropriate perspective in Rhino; I then popped them on top of the perspective drawing I'd already done of the town in Photoshop (I'll post a WIP of this little monster on my Tumblr later today :D).

The starfish is one of these guys: ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pisaster_ochraceus ) (I admit to choosing it for color and shape; I don't know what part of the world they live in; in a post-apocalypse type situation, though, I figure you can be a bit fast and loose with stuff like that) and you should not of course pick up starfish off the rocks you find them on, because you will hurt their little feet (not the arms, but the feet inside the arms). I'm assuming either that this guy was already floating free, or that Maria... coaxed it onto her hand? Can you do that? I don't know. Anyhow, the starfish is fine.

The foreground plants are yucca, which I was intrigued to find are now naturalized in Italy (although they aren't native to that area). (I understand the internet's been interested in color lately: so, for anyone interested, the yucca in the foreground are white and green. Any other color you think you see is entirely a product of your own imagination.)

Here's a drawing of uyudong's ( http://uyudong.deviantart.com/ ) lovely character Season, feeding chipmunks. (when I was little, I was told that the trick was to lay a trail of seeds from the chipmunk burrow and then lay a distance away with a handful of seed and wait for the chipmunks to emerge and follow the trail to your hand -- this may or may not be a real chipmunk-taming method that works, or it may just be something older people tell children to get them to spend long periods of time being quiet; it's a nice idea anyhow)

Also there are budgies.

These ladies are two characters from Chizicus ( http://chizicus.tumblr.com/ ) and Pigeonsoup ( http://pigeonsoup.tumblr.com/ ) ' s extremely neat webcomic Gran Grimoire ( http://www.grangrimoire.com/ ), which you should check out. I figured some sort of a mysterious library would be appropriate. The library is very very slightly based on this ( http://cache2.asset-cache.net/gc/CA0573-005-france-paris-assemblee-nationale-palais-gettyimages.jpg?v=1&c=IWSAsset&k=2&d=kUg8zxsITqE39NKTEjErVXvpU9BHqFSzChtHhl8LquY%3D ) but only slightly.

These are sweep_stakes’ (http://sweep-stakes.deviantart.com/) characters Mordan and Seth, who make a very good looking couple. She asked me to draw them sharing a cigarette, so I did. (Admittedly, as we know from Tennessee Williams (http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/180369) it may not be the best idea to smoke in bed)

Also, I take no credit for the design of the little table. (http://www.skinnerinc.com/auctions/2661B/lots/507)

Thecrazydragon ( http://www.furaffinity.net/user/thecrazydragon ) asked me to draw her anthro dragon woman character in medieval dress, so I had a lot of fun looking up medieval sculptures and fashions and such. And the character in question is very elegantly shaped for dressing in fine robes.

The flowers are lupines; they don't grow where I live, so to me they are extra large bluebonnets.

A commission for Coboye ( https://www.weasyl.com/~coboye ) of their awesome shape-changing character Miguel Vargas, coming in his apartment at the window and leaving at the door (and then going across the street). The wisteria there must be tougher than it looks.

This is a commission of two fine looking characters belonging to harag ( http://www.furaffinity.net/user/harag/ ).

This handsome couple of ladies are RyuRoots’ characters Karina and Karana. (I very much enjoy getting commissions to draw elf ladies in love.)

(and the three kinds of ferns are nonspecific. Obviously, the large ones in the background are tree ferns, but there are many kinds of tree ferns and these are not any specific kind of tree fern.)

So, here's the last of the six commission drawings! This guy is another of WhiteMantis' ( http://www.furaffinity.net/user/whitemantis/ ) beautiful anthro mantis characters, Eien, whom she asked me to draw at a forest shrine. (I put in lots of little guys rather than one big one) The plants are these ( http://marg09.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/very-old-camphor-tree-kyoto.jpg ) and this ( http://www.cycadconnections.com.au/images/plants/large/Cycas%20revoluta-2.jpg ) ... or as close as I could get to those plants; turns out it's kinda hard to draw cycads without making their leaves look more like feathers than fronds. But anyhow, this character was a pleasure to draw; I understand he was originally designed by Fydbac ( http://www.furaffinity.net/user/fydbac ), another person whose character designs are always just the best. :D

This is WhiteMantis' ( http://www.furaffinity.net/user/whitemantis/ ) lovely orchid mantis lady, Nae. I just love her character design; I hope I did it justice. She's sitting in a persimmon tree, next to a patch of toad lilies. (If you had a hard shell, there would be a lot more positions that would be comfortable to sit or lie in, don't you think?)

These are maelweilh's characters Mordred and Evert, whom she asked me to draw in a medieval setting, which was lots of fun.

Mercifully it's a fantasy medieval universe, in which her characters live, so I did not have to worry too much about historical accuracy. (Nonetheless, the chess board is this board: ( http://www.extravaganzi.com/17th-ce.....d-at-sothebys/ ), the chess game just finishing is this game: ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPm9k6ul9EI ), the chess pieces are these pieces (even though there are extra pieces in that set and it's not meant for conventional chess): ( http://courierchess.com/thepainting.htm ), and the inspiration for my just cramming the characters in around a tiny precarious little table with no space for the pieces already taken is this stained glass window: ( http://www.pbase.com/bmcmorrow/image/101046191 ) The space is not based on any specific real world castle; the room's probably a bit too tall and narrow to be a keep. I dunno. Maybe it's the castle's dedicated Unresolved Sexual Tension room.)

I also used no assistance from Illustrator or Rhino or any other program to make my perspective 100 percent correct by the numbers in this instance, seeing as how medieval artists weren't so constrained by the letter of the law of perspective (because no one had yet written that law. but still.); this time I just eyeballed the room and table and relative sizes of everything.

These are Marlin's characters Caden and Bajar, who are part of the same universe/story as her characters Lorn and Noah, whom I've drawn before ( here ) She asked me to draw them together in a frozen landscape; I thought I'd make it a frozen lake with a boat. Lots of fun drawing wings and feather cloaks and characters with interesting scars; I really like Bajar's character design. :)

And you can read more about and see more of all four characters over here.

I had so much fun drawing this. :) These are May's character Yvannale and Ottery's character Kojituu, in their human/gijinka forms. There are lots of adorable pictures of them here and my picture owes a lot in particular to this lovely sketch of them here. And Koji is a librarian for the purposes of this picture, because I've seen the Music Man too many times and thought it would be cute.
